Consider again that dot. That's here, that's home, that's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

MOGWAI

are a Scottish post-rock band, formed in 1995 in Glasgow. The band consists of Stuart Braithwaite (guitar, vocals), John Cummings (guitar, vocals), Barry Burns (guitar, piano, synthesiser, vocals), Dominic Aitchison (bass guitar), and Martin Bulloch (drum kit). The band typically compose lengthy guitar-based instrumental pieces that feature dynamic contrast, melodic bass guitar lines, and heavy use of distortion and effects.

History

Stuart Braithwaite and Dominic Aitchison originally met in April 1991, and four years later added old schoolfriend Martin Bulloch to their ranks, forming the band Mogwai in the process.

The band is named after the creatures from the film Gremlins, although guitarist Stuart Braithwaite comments that "it has no significant meaning and we always intended on getting a better one, but like a lot of other things we never got round to it." 'Mogwai' means "evil spirit" or "devil" in Cantonese (Chinese). The band debuted in February 1996 with the "Tuner"/"Lower" single and by the end of the year they received 'single of the week' from NME for "Summer", a feat repeated early in 1997 with "New Paths to Helicon".

After playing a few shows the band expanded with the introduction of John Cummings on guitar, and Teenage Fanclub drummer Brendan O'Hare joined whilst they recorded their debut album Mogwai Young Team. The album, released in October 1997, reached number 75 on the UK Albums Chart, and featured a guest appearance from Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap.

In 1998 the band had their first singles chart success with a split single with Magoo of Black Sabbath cover versions reaching number 60 in the UK and an EP of "Fear Satan" remixes reaching number 57. In the same year, an album of remixes of the band's tracks by the likes of Kevin Shields, Alec Empire, and μ-ziq was issued (Kicking a Dead Pig). The band also remixed tracks for David Holmes and Manic Street Preachers. The band have often been critical of other musicians, including Blur (who were the subject of T-shirts sold by the band featuring the words "Blur Are Shite"), Robbie Williams, Axl Rose and Fred Durst.

The band were for several years signed to renowned Glasgow indie label Chemikal Underground, but are now distributed by different labels, such as Matador in the US and Play It Again Sam in the UK. They have also developed their own label, Rock Action Records, named after Stooges drummer Scott Asheton, who had his name changed to Rock Action.

O'Hare was sacked after the release of the album (reportedly after upsetting the rest of the band by talking all through a performance by Arab Strap), before Barry Burns was brought in prior to the recording of Come On Die Young, the band's second album. He had already played a few shows with the band, as a flautist and as an occasional pianist. According to Stuart, Barry was invited into the band because he was a good laugh. The album reached number 29 in the UK.

Since 1998, and for the recording of every album since Young Team, the band line up has remained unchanged. However, fellow Scot musician Luke Sutherland has contributed violin (and more recently vocals and guitar) to Mogwai's records and live performances.

The band's 2001 album Rock Action gave them their highest album chart placing, reaching number 23.

In 2006, the band provided the soundtrack to the film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, with the soundtrack album released the following year. The band also collaborated with Clint Mansell on the soundtrack to The Fountain in 2006. Mogwai are also featured in the 2009 post-rock documentary Introspective.

The band's 2008 Batcat EP featured a collaboration with Roky Erickson, with Erickson providing vocals on "Devil Rides".

In 2010 the band announced the release of their first live film (Burning, premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival in February 2010) and live album (called Special Moves); Both contain content from their Brooklyn shows during their 2008/2009 American tour.

Braithwaite also stated that the band were working on material for a new album for release in early 2011. In January 2010 the band auctioned off several items including the piano used by Burns during their 2006-2007 world tour in aid of the 2010 Haiti earthquake appeal. The band also donated an exclusive track to the PEACE project in April 2010 in support of Amnesty International.

As of September 2010, Mogwai have left longtime home Matador Records, and have signed with Sub Pop to distribute their releases in North America. On 27 October 2010, Mogwai announced their seventh studio album, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. The album was released on 14 February in the UK and entered the UK Albums Chart at number 25.

In May 2012 the band will headline and curate one day of the three-day All Tomorrow's Parties 'I'll Be Your Mirror' festival at Alexandra Palace, London.

Keren Ann Zeidel (Hebrew: born March 10, 1974) is a singer-songwriter-composer-producer and engineer based largely in Paris, Tel Aviv and New York City. She plays guitar, piano and clarinet, engineers and writes choir and musical arrangements.

Her parents are Russian-Jewish and Dutch-Javanese. She lived in Israel and in the Netherlands until the age of 11, when her family moved to France. Though she lived and recorded mostly in France and New York, she retains her Dutch and Israeli citizenship.

Keren Ann has released six solo albums; she is also a member of the band Lady and Bird with Barði Jóhannsson. They released an eponymous album in 2003 and have worked on diverse composition projects, such as a show with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavík (May 2008) with director Daniel Kawka. The live performance has been recorded and post-produced by the band and was released in September 2009. A second show for the Parisian hall "Salle Pleyel" was held in October 2009, this time with "L'Orchestre Lamoureux" directed by Christophe Mangou. Keren Ann and Bardi have also created the music for the TGV 2005-2006-2007 campaign.

Keren Ann took part in many internationally acclaimed recordings such as "Chambre Avec Vue" written for Henri Salvador in 2000, and "The Isis Project" written with Guy Chambers in 2004. In 2008 Keren Ann composed, with Tibo Javoy, the entire sound design for the European TV Channel "ARTE".

Her music has been featured in many films and TV series - "Grey's Anatomy", "Six Feet Under", "Big Love" and "Deux Jours A Tuer". Her song "Beautiful Day" has been the sound of the "Skyteam" campaign, and in 2008 her song "Lay Your Head Down" was the synch for the international H&M Spring commercial.

Keren Ann co-wrote and co-produced with Doriand the second album of singer/actress Emmanuelle Seigner, due for release in February 2010. She contributed an original score for a French feature by director Benoit Petre, starring Jane Birkin. The film was due to be released in March 2010.

Her sixth solo album, 101, was issued in 2011.

MILES KANE

Miles Peter Kane (born 17 March 1986) is an English musician originally from Meols on the Wirral near liverpool, best known as the co-frontman of The Last Shadow Puppets and former frontman of The Rascals. He was formerly the vocalist and lead guitarist for The Rascals, but announced the band's break-up in August 2009.

He is currently pursuing a solo career, and continues to be a part of his side-project The Last Shadow Puppets. His debut solo album, Colour of the Trap, was released on 9 May 2011.

Solo career

In early 2009, after his last tour with The Rascals, Kane left the band to focus on a solo career. He then signed with Columbia Records and began recording his solo album with Dan Carey and Dan the Automator, who had previously worked with Gorillaz and Kasabian.

Kane's debut single, "Inhaler" was released on 22 November 2010, and he did a series of solo shows throughout November, as well as supporting The Courteeners at several shows in December. He then continued solo performances in January and February, before supporting Beady Eye at eight shows in March. Kane released another single, "Come Closer" on 20 February 2011, reaching #85 on the UK Singles Chart.

"Rearrange", the lead single for his debut album, was released on 27 March 2011 and reached #149 on the UK Singles Chart. The album, titled Colour of the Trap, was released on 9 May 2011. One track, "My Fantasy" features backing vocals from Noel Gallagher, while another, "Happenstance" is a duet between Kane and French actress Clémence Poésy. Half of the tracks on the album were co-written by Alex Turner, Kane's partner in The Last Shadow Puppets.

Kane supported Arctic Monkeys for two shows in Sheffield in June 2011.

Jean-Michel André Jarre (born 24 August 1948) is a French composer, performer and music producer. He is a pioneer in the electronic, synthpop, ambient and New Age genres, and known as an organiser of outdoor spectacles of his music featuring lights, laser displays, and fireworks.

Jarre was raised in Lyon by his mother and grandparents, and trained on the piano. From an early age he was introduced to a variety of art forms, including those of street performers, jazz musicians, and the artist Pierre Soulages. He played guitar in a band, but his musical style was perhaps most heavily influenced by Pierre Schaeffer, a pioneer of musique concrète at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales.

His first mainstream success was the 1976 album Oxygène. Recorded in a makeshift studio at his home, the album sold an estimated 12 million copies. Oxygène was followed in 1978 by Équinoxe, and in 1979 Jarre performed to a record-breaking audience of more than a million people at the Place de la Concorde, a record he has since broken three times.

More albums were to follow, but his 1979 concert served as a blueprint for his future performances around the world. Several of his albums have been released to coincide with large-scale outdoor events, and he is now perhaps as well known as a performer as a musician.

Jarre has sold an estimated 80 million albums and singles. He was the first Western musician to be allowed to perform in the People's Republic of China, and holds the world record for the largest-ever audience at an outdoor event.

EQUINOXE

Équinoxe (English: "equinox") was the second major-label album release by French musician Jean Michel Jarre, released on Disques Dreyfus (with license to Polydor) in late 1978.

The album reflects a day in the life of a human being, from morning to night. Parts 1 to 4 (i.e. side A) and tracks 5 to 8 (side B) segué smoothly from one to the next.

Jarre had developed his sound, employing more dynamic and rhythmic elements, particularly a greater use of sequencing on basslines. Much of this was achieved using custom equipment developed by his collaborator Michel Geiss.

The release was followed by a concert on the Place de la Concorde, Paris on July 14, 1979. The concert attracted 1 million people, becoming Jarre's first entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest crowd for an outdoor concert.

Two singles were released from the album, "Équinoxe Part 5" first, and then "Équinoxe Part 4". Part of "Équinoxe Part 8" has been played live with different arrangements, including a version for an acoustic street organ, under the title of "Band in the Rain".

The album reached #11 in the UK charts and #126 in the US charts.

Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), also known as Johann Baptist Strauss or Johann Strauss, Jr., the Younger, or the Son (German: Sohn), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely then responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.

Strauss was born in St. Ulrich (now a part of Neubau), the son of Johann Strauss I, another composer of dance music. His father did not wish him to become a composer, but rather a banker; however, the son defied his father's wishes, and went on to study music with the composer Joseph Drechsler and the violin with Anton Kollmann, the ballet répétiteur of the Vienna Court Opera. Strauss had two younger brothers, Josef and Eduard Strauss, who became composers of light music as well, although they were never as well-known as their elder brother.

Some of Johann Strauss's most famous works include The Blue Danube, Kaiser-Walzer, Tales from the Vienna Woods, the Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, and the Pizzicato Polka. Among his operettas, Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron are the most well-known.

THE BLUE DANUBE - WALTZ

The Blue Danube is the common English title of An der schönen blauen Donau, Op. 314 (German for At the Beautiful Blue Danube), a waltz by the Austrian composer Johann Strauss II, composed in 1866. Originally performed 13 February 1867 at a concert of the Wiener Männergesangsverein (Vienna Men's Choral Association), it has been one of the most consistently popular pieces of music in the classical repertoire. Its initial performance was only a mild success however and Strauss is reputed to have said "The devil take the waltz, my only regret is for the coda—I wish that had been a success!"

After the original music was written, the words were added by the Choral Association's poet, Joseph Weyl. Strauss later added more music, and Weyl needed to change some of the words. Strauss adapted it into a purely orchestral version for the World's Fair in Paris that same year, and it became a great success in this form. The instrumental version is by far the most commonly performed today. An alternate text by Franz von Gernerth, Donau so blau (Danube so blue), is also used on occasion.

The sentimental Viennese connotations of the piece have made it into a sort of unofficial Austrian national anthem. It is a traditional encore piece at the annual Vienna New Year's Concert. The first few bars are also the interval signal of Österreichischer Rundfunk's overseas programs. On New Year's Eve the waltz is traditionally broadcast by all public-law television and radio stations exactly at midnight.

When Strauss's stepdaughter, Alice von Meyszner-Strauss, asked the composer Johannes Brahms to sign her autograph-fan, he wrote down the first bars of The Blue Danube, but adding "Leider nicht von Johannes Brahms" ("Alas! not by Johannes Brahms").

The piece's popularity has been bolstered, as it became famous for its prominent use in the highly influential Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. In the movie, the piece is used to accompany a lengthy scene in which a Pan Am spaceplane is seen docking with a space station, as well as its trip to the Moon. Its use is, perhaps, intended to create a parallel between the intricate docking procedure and the role of two dancers in a waltz. The piece is also used to accompany the film's closing credits. The movie's use of this piece has led to further use in pastiches of it.

WINTER CRESCENT - GREECE

Winter crescent were formed at the winter of 2000 by Alexis Ktistakis and Nick Drakos, in Heraklion Crete, Greece. After 8 years of line-up changes, the band started to find a stable formation in early 2008.

Winter Crescent has performed over the years live in various cities all over Greece and has recorded a demo cd entitled Battle Of Egos, with 7 songs (35 minutes playtime), which was self-released in the early May of 2009. This demo was rewarded by the Greek Metal Hammer as the Pick of the Month of September 2009 issue.

In the late September of 2009, Winter Crescent went on tour with 4 other Greek bands and they played in 7 cities (Heraklion, Rethimnon, Ioannina, Katerini, Thessaloniki, Larisa and Athens) with great success!

At January 2010 they won the Max Fm: Stargazer competition concerning the coverage of the cost of a professional Video Clip. Our most sincere gratitude to Nikos Athinaios and Atheaton Productions! Winter Crescent are currently promoting their demo cd, recording new songs for their upcoming full length album and they are searching for a decent record deal.or a distributor !

(Quelque part, un jour) s'est levé assez tard ce jour-là. Il a bu une énorme tasse de café pour réveiller sa vieille tête usée, tout en fumant une cigarette parce que manger au petit déjeuner ne fait pas partie de sa philosophie de vie.

Il s'est ensuite empressé d'allumer son ordinateur, celui-ci lui manquait déjà. De fil en aiguille, la faim et l'excès d'acide gastrique qui le rongeaient de l'intérieur ont eu raison de lui. En effet, l'objet bonk~ lui procura une immense envie de manger des frites. Aussitôt dit, aussitôt fait. Les frites disparurent de la nature pendant un certain temps, et je dirais même plus, un temps certain.

Peu après ce petit épisode très éprouvant, il remarqua le retard excessif que ces maudites frites avaient engendré. Avec rapidité et extrême nécessité, il engloutit son dessert pour prendre le train à destination de Onsenfout afin d'aller enregistrer le braillement de jeunes étudiants complètement ivres de bonheur et de bière coupée au genièvre.

Ce magnifique spectacle qui s'offrit ainsi à ses yeux et surtout à ses oreilles l'ont complètement bouleversé, au point que sa musique en sera à jamais transformée.

Amy Winehouse death: Neighbour in Camden heard ‘screaming and howling’

One of her neighbours said he is convinced she died in the early hours of Friday because he heard screaming.

“I think something happened that night. It sounded like some weird sexual game. There was screaming and howling.”

The man, who would not be named, said he was woken by the sound at around 2am that night.

“It just sounded really weird and my son said he heard some kind of drum beating.”

This afternoon he heard one of Winehouse’s friends crying in the house, and realised she was dead.

He believes a friend left her at home after a night out, and returned this afternoon to find her body.

“She’s been quite low-profile and that’s why, when I heard these sounds - screaming - I thought it was unlike her.

“I said to my son ‘Maybe she’s taken a bad drug’.”

He said he saw her about three weeks ago being helped into the house by her minders, and was unable to walk at 10am.

“She couldn’t walk, she could hardly put one foot in front of the other.”

Her cat, Sky, would come into his house for food and to sleep, he said.

Local restaurant owner Ze Silva, 56, said Winehouse would come in as regularly as twice a week.

She saw her last Tuesday and said she had stopped drinking.

“She had nothing to drink. She said to me ‘Darling, don’t give me any alcohol, I’m not drinking any more’.

“She was normal. She would speak to everyone, have pictures taken with the kids, give autographs to the kids.

“She was a good girl, I’m very sad.”

Winehouse would go to the restaurant, A Baia, to play snooker with her bodyguards and would send them to get her takeaway fried breakfasts.

Flowers, teddies and candles had been left next to the police tape blocking off Camden Square.

One card read: “You will not be forgotten by Camden. We all love you and will continue to love you. Your legend lives on.”

James Douglas "Jim" Morrison (December 8, 1943 – July 3, 1971) was an American lead singer and lyricist of the rock band The Doors, as well as a poet.

Morrison would often improvise poem passages while the band played live, which was his trademark. He was ranked number 47 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" and is widely regarded, with his wild personality and performances, as one of the most iconic, charismatic and pioneering frontmen in rock music history.

Morrison flew to Paris in March 1971, took up residence in a rented apartment on the rue Beautreillis on the Right Bank, and went for long walks through the city, admiring the city's architecture. During that time, Morrison shaved his beard and lost some of the weight he had gained in the previous months. The last studio recording was with two American street musicians — a session dismissed by Manzarek as "drunken gibberish". The session included a version of a song-in-progress, "Orange County Suite", which can be heard on the bootleg The Lost Paris Tapes.

Morrison died on July 3, 1971. In the official account of his death, he was found in a Paris apartment bathtub by Courson. Pursuant to French law, no autopsy was performed because the medical examiner claimed to have found no evidence of foul play. The absence of an official autopsy has left many questions regarding Morrison's cause of death.

JIM MORRISON

James Douglas Morrison was born in Melbourne, Florida, to future Rear Admiral George Stephen Morrison and Clara Morrison. Morrison had a sister, Anne Robin, who was born in 1947 in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and a brother, Andrew Lee Morrison, who was born in 1948 in Los Altos, California. He was of Irish and Scottish descent (see Clan Morrison). Morrison reportedly had an I.Q. of 149.

In 1947, Morrison, then four years old, allegedly witnessed a car accident in the desert, where a family of American Indians were injured and possibly killed. He referred to this incident in a spoken word performance on the song "Dawn's Highway" from the album An American Prayer, and again in the songs "Peace Frog" and "Ghost Song."

Morrison believed the incident to be the most formative event of his life, and made repeated references to it in the imagery in his songs, poems, and interviews. His family does not recall this incident happening in the way he told it. According to the Morrison biography No One Here Gets Out Alive, Morrison's family did drive past a car accident on an Indian reservation when he was a child, and he was very upset by it. The book The Doors, written by the remaining members of The Doors, explains how different Morrison's account of the incident was from the account of his father. This book quotes his father as saying, "We went by several Indians. It did make an impression on him [the young James]. He always thought about that crying Indian." This is contrasted sharply with Morrison's tale of "Indians scattered all over the highway, bleeding to death." In the same book, his sister is quoted as saying, "He enjoyed telling that story and exaggerating it. He said he saw a dead Indian by the side of the road, and I don't even know if that's true."

With his father in the United States Navy, Morrison's family moved often. He spent part of his childhood in San Diego, California. In 1958, Morrison attended Alameda High School in Alameda, California. He graduated from George Washington High School (now George Washington Middle School) in Alexandria, Virginia, in June 1961. His father was also stationed at Mayport Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jim was inspired by the writings of philosophers and poets. He was influenced by Friedrich Nietzsche, whose views on aesthetics, morality, and the Apollonian and Dionysian duality would appear in Jim’s conversation, poetry and songs. He read "Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Greeks" (Parallel Lives). He also read the French Symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud, whose style would later influence the form of Jim’s short prose poems. Jim was also influenced by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Kenneth Patchen, Michael McClure and Gregory Corso.

Jim’s English teacher once commented, "I felt that Jim was the only one in the class who read Ulysses, and understood it." Honoré de Balzac, Jean Cocteau, and Molière also interested Jim, along with most of the French existentialist philosophers. Jim’s senior-year English teacher said that, "Jim read as much and probably more than any student in class, but everything he read was so offbeat I had another teacher, who was going to the Library of Congress, check to see if the books Jim was reporting on actually existed. I suspected he was making them up, as they were English books on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century demonology. I’d never heard of them, but they existed, and I’m convinced from the paper he wrote that he read them, and the Library of Congress would’ve been the only source."

Morrison went to live with his paternal grandparents in Clearwater, Florida, where he attended classes at St. Petersburg Junior College. In 1962, he transferred to Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, where he appeared in a school recruitment film. While attending FSU, Morrison was arrested for a prank, following a home football game.

In January 1964, Morrison moved to Los Angeles, California, to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He attended Jack Hirschman's class on Antonin Artaud in the Comparative Literature program within the UCLA English Department. Artaud's brand of surrealist theatre had a profound impact on Morrison's dark poetic sensibility of cinematic theatricality.

Morrison completed his undergraduate degree at UCLA's film school and the Theater Arts department of the College of Fine Arts in 1965. In an early display of rebellion, he refused to attend the graduation ceremony, his degree diploma being mailed to him. He made two films while attending UCLA. First Love, the first of these films, made with Morrison's classmate and roommate Max Schwartz, was released to the public when it appeared in a documentary about the film Obscura.

During these years, while living in Venice Beach, he became friends with writers at the Los Angeles Free Press. Morrison was an advocate of the underground newspaper until his death in 1971. He later conducted a lengthy and in-depth interview with Bob Chorush and Andy Kent, both working for the Free Press at the time (January 1971), and was planning on visiting the headquarters of the busy newspaper shortly before leaving for Paris.

TV on the Radio is an American art rock band formed in 2001 in Brooklyn, New York, whose music spans numerous diverse genres, from post-punk to electro and free jazz to soul music.

The group has released several EPs including their debut Young Liars (2003), and four critically acclaimed studio albums: Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes (2004), Return to Cookie Mountain (2006), Dear Science (2008), and Nine Types of Light (2011).

TV on the Radio is composed of Tunde Adebimpe (vocals/loops), David Andrew Sitek (guitars/keyboards/loops) and Kyp Malone (vocals/guitars/bass/loops). For "Return to Cookie Mountain", they added Jaleel Bunton (drums/vocals/loops/guitars) and Gerard Smith (bass/keyboards) as official members. Smith died from cancer on April 20, 2011.

Other contributors have included David Bowie (vocals), Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs (guitar), Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead (vocals), Martin Perna of Antibalas (saxophones, flute) and Katrina Ford of Celebration (vocals).

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD - THE POWER OF LOVE

FGTH released single, "The Power of Love," at the end of 1984. Unlike the earlier singles, this song was a slower-paced ballad, but it also went to Number One in December and making the band the first act for two decades (since Gerry & the Pacemakers, a fellow Liverpool band, in 1963) to achieve chart-toppers with its first three releases.

The video was not banned on this occasion but still caused trouble for the group — because it depicted a nativity scene (and on its first showing did not feature any members of the band, who were subsequently added as picture framing), it was incorrectly grouped in the category of Christmas-only records. As a result, to this day radio stations seem to give it airplay only during the festive period.

The song's release was preceded by an advertising campaign that, cheekily, declared it to be the band's third number one single, as if this was a fait accompli. The Band Aid project, for which Johnson recorded a message for the B-side, meant that FGTH managed only one week at the top this time before it was replaced by "Do They Know It's Christmas?."

Power of Dreams are a Dublin based pop/rock band, built around brothers Craig and Keith Walker. They released their critically acclaimed debut EP "A Little Piece of God" on Keith Cullen's London-based Setanta Records in 1989.

Following a six-figure bidding war between rival record labels, Power of Dreams then signed a deal with Polygram.

In December 1989, the British music magazine, NME reported that Power of Dreams, along with others such as Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine and The Charlatans, were their pick as 'stars of tomorrow'.

Grove Armada is an electronic music duo comprising Andy Cato and Tom Findlay from England. They are now primarily based in London, and continue to produce and record music as well as hosting semi-regular club nights in London and an annual London festival under the Lovebox banner.

The group has collaborated with a diverse array of artists including Neneh Cherry, DJ Gram’Ma Funk, Sophie Barker, Nappy Roots, Fudge Dog, Sunshine Anderson, Mutya Buena, Jeru The Damaja, Richie Havens and Will Young. Tom Findlay has described working with Prince as his dream collaboration, although there are no plans for such at the moment. They have also recently played with Bryan Ferry in a song called "Shameless" from the album Black Light.

Groove Armada first formed in the mid-1990s after they had been introduced by Cato’s girlfriend and soon started their own club, also called Groove Armada, after a '70s discothèque.

On November 15th 1815, Kaspar Karl, Beethoven's brother, died. He left behind his wife, whom the composer referred to as 'The queen of the night' due to the pastimes of the widow, as well as a son, Karl, who was 9.

Here Beethoven's life was to change dramatically. His brother had written that he wished Karl's guardianship to be exercised by both his wife and his brother Ludwig. Beethoven took this role very seriously, but the 45 year old celibate who could no longer hear found it difficult to live with and understand a child, and then a young man. This cohabitation was the cause of a new trial against the mother of the child, a generation conflict and numerous troubles.

In 1816, Carl Czerny (future teacher of Franz Liszt and once Beethoven's student) became Karl's music teacher, but didn't find the talent in the boy which Beethoven hoped him to posses. At this time , he ended his cycle of lieders 'To the distant loved one'and drafted the first theme for his ninth symphony.

(born 24 May 1952, Vitry-sur-Seine, near Paris, France) is a French disco drummer, singer-songwriter and record producer. He is one of the big names from the disco era.

Marc Cerrone has sold over thirty million albums and has often performed in front of hundreds of thousands of people at huge concerts and events such as The 2005 Dance Party Live in Versailles and The 2000 Los Angeles Millenium Célébration where, at the request of the Mayor of Los Angeles, Cerrone staged the initials Hollywood and produced an exceptional opera.

Also in 1989, he performed in the concert at Paris's Place de la Concorde for the celebration of the bicentenary of the Revolution in front of more than 600,000 spectators.

In 1991 he performed a concert event for the launch of the first satellite TV HD in Japan (Tokyo). He claims, and it is often credited by others, that he was "the first" to put the kick drum (or bass drum) into the foreground of modern dance music.

Love over Gold is the fourth album by British rock band Dire Straits. Due to its lengthy atmospheric instrumentals it has been cited as the band's only album that resembles progressive rock, although not quite achieving it.

Love over Gold sold 4.4 million copies in Europe and reached the gold status, in the U.S., only in 1986. It was remastered and released with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 for most of the world on Vertigo Records outside the US and in 2000 in the United States.

Men at Work were an Australian reggae-influenced rock band which achieved international success in the 1980s. They are the only Australian artists to have a #1 album and single simultaneously in the United States (with Business as Usual and "Down Under" respectively). At the same time, they also had a simultaneous #1 single and album in the United Kingdom. The group won the 1983 Grammy Award for Best New Artist and sold over 30 million albums worldwide. The band's sound is distinguished by its use of woodwind and brass instruments.

Colin Hay emigrated to Australia in 1967 from Scotland with his family. In 1978, he formed a duo with Ron Strykert, which expanded with the addition of drummer Jerry Speiser and Australian progressive rock keyboard player Greg Sneddon. They formed an unnamed four-piece group that would later morph into Men at Work. The band's first experience in the recording studio was recording the music to Riff Raff, a low-budget stage musical Sneddon had worked on. Sneddon soon left, to be replaced in late 1979 by saxophonist/flautist/keyboardist Greg Ham.
